Working Capital Loans in Ireland: How They Help Your Cash Flow
What is a working capital loan?
Working capital is the money a business uses to run day to day: paying suppliers, wages, rent and other bills while waiting for customers to pay. A working capital loan tops up that money when cash coming in does not match cash going out.
It is one of the most common reasons Irish SMEs borrow, and it is about timing as much as growth.
When businesses use one
- Seasonal businesses buying stock or hiring ahead of their busy period
- Slow-paying customers leaving a gap between doing the work and getting paid
- A large new contract that needs materials or staff before the first invoice
- Rising costs that squeeze cash before prices can be adjusted
Working capital vs longer-term borrowing
Working capital loans are usually shorter than loans for property or major equipment, because the money is recycled through the business quickly. Matching the term to the purpose matters: borrowing short-term money for a long-term asset can put pressure on cash flow, while a long loan for a short gap means paying interest for longer than you need to.
What lenders look at
Because a working capital loan is repaid from trading income, lenders focus on cash flow:
- Your recent bank statements, often six months, to see income and regular costs
- Your filed accounts, to see how the business has performed over time
- Whether the repayments fit comfortably within your monthly cash flow
- Your tax position, shown by a tax clearance certificate
Getting the amount right
Work out the size of the gap before you apply. A simple month-by-month cash flow forecast shows when money is short and by how much. Borrowing enough to cover the gap with some headroom is sensible. Borrowing far more than you need adds cost without adding value.
